Why are my eyes always itchy?
My eyes have been itchy lately, and I can't help but rub them. Sometimes they also become red, and I feel as if there's a foreign body in my eyes. What's causing this? Is it due to allergies, or could there be another issue?
Itchy eyes can be caused by various factors, commonly including:
1. Allergic conjunctivitis: This is one of the most common causes of itchy eyes. It may be a reaction to allergens such as pollen, dust, or pet dander, causing redness, itching, and tearing of the eyes.
2. Dry eye syndrome: Prolonged eye use, especially staring at electronic screens such as televisions or computers, can easily lead to dryness and itching of the eyes.
3. Contact keratitis: Wearing contact lenses for extended periods or poor lens hygiene may cause eye discomfort, including itching.
4. Blepharitis: Inflammation of the skin along the eyelid margins, often accompanied by itching, redness, and flaking.
5. Improper use of cosmetics: Powdered cosmetics entering the eyes or bacterial or mite infestation around the eyes may also cause eye itching.
Managing itchy eyes typically includes avoiding known allergens, using artificial tears to relieve dry eye symptoms, avoiding prolonged eye strain, maintaining proper eye hygiene, and using cosmetics appropriately. If symptoms persist or worsen, it is recommended to seek medical examination immediately.
