Codonopsis is a commonly used traditional Chinese herb, primarily known for its functions of invigorating the middle jiao, replenishing qi, strengthening the spleen, nourishing the stomach, moistening the lungs, and relieving cough. It is frequently used to treat symptoms such as spleen and stomach deficiency, reduced appetite, loose stools, shortness of breath, and fatigue. However, Codonopsis may also cause certain side effects.

1. Heatiness: Codonopsis has a warm nature and excessive consumption may cause internal heat, manifesting as sore throat, dry mouth, thirst, flushed face, and other symptoms.

2. Gastrointestinal discomfort: Large doses of Codonopsis may irritate the gastrointestinal tract, causing symptoms such as abdominal pain and diarrhea.

3. Cardiovascular issues: Although Codonopsis can nourish and enrich the blood and has a certain regulatory effect on the cardiovascular system, long-term and excessive use may lead to cardiovascular problems such as arrhythmia. However, these issues generally resolve after discontinuation of the herb.

4. Indigestion: Codonopsis has certain nourishing properties, but in individuals with normal or slightly weakened spleen and stomach function, prolonged and excessive use may lead to indigestion, manifesting as abdominal distension and reduced appetite.

When using Codonopsis, attention should be paid to controlling the dosage and duration of use to avoid excessive or prolonged administration.
