Ganglion Cyst of the Wrist: Optimal Treatment Methods
A cyst has appeared on the wrist, affecting joint movement. After visiting the hospital, it was diagnosed as a wrist ganglion cyst. What is the best way to treat it?

Ganglion cyst of the wrist is a common soft tissue tumor that usually occurs on the dorsal or palmar side of the wrist, and sometimes may also appear on the fingers or toes. This condition is caused by a cystic mass formed from the accumulation of synovial fluid within the tendon sheath. In most cases, it is benign, but it may cause pain or affect joint movement.
Common treatment methods:
1. Observation: If the cyst is small and does not cause pain or discomfort, regular monitoring may be sufficient. This is because many small ganglion cysts may resolve spontaneously.
2. Aspiration: This method involves using a needle and syringe to drain the fluid from the cyst. It is a non-surgical treatment that can rapidly relieve symptoms. However, the recurrence rate with this method is relatively high because the cyst wall is not removed.
3. Surgical excision: If the cyst is large or causing significant symptoms, such as pain or impaired movement, surgical treatment is recommended. Surgery allows complete removal of the cyst and repair of the joint capsule, thereby reducing the risk of recurrence.
