Disease description:

I have been experiencing a dull ache in my lower back recently, especially after physical exertion, when the pain becomes more noticeable. After an examination, I was told it's due to lumbago, or lower back strain. What exactly is lumbago? Now, when I bend over for a prolonged period, I feel uncomfortable and am unable to lift heavy objects. What causes lumbago exactly?

Lumbar strain, commonly referred to as lumbosacral muscle strain or lumbar fasciitis, is an extremely common condition affecting the lower back. It has various causes, mainly including prolonged poor posture, excessive physical exertion, lack of exercise, sudden heavy physical labor, and exposure to cold. This condition primarily involves chronic injury to soft tissues in the lower back, such as muscles, ligaments, and fascia.

On one hand, maintaining the same posture for extended periods is a common cause of lumbar strain. For example, sitting or standing for long periods or working while bending forward—under these conditions, the lower back muscles and ligaments remain in a tense state without sufficient relaxation. Over time, this can lead to fatigue and injury of the muscles and ligaments, resulting in pain.

On the other hand, if acute low back sprain is not treated promptly and appropriately, or if the management is improper, the injured tissues may fail to fully recover. This can easily progress into chronic lumbar muscle strain, causing patients long-term discomfort and pain in the lower back.
