Bursitis is a common joint disease that primarily occurs around the joints of the body, such as the shoulders, knees, elbows, and hips. Bursae are small fluid-filled sacs located between muscles, tendons, and bones. Their main function is to reduce friction and help muscles and tendons slide smoothly over bones. When a bursa is injured or overused, it may become inflamed, leading to bursitis.

Main symptoms of bursitis include:

1. Swelling: Bursitis is often accompanied by localized swelling, particularly evident when superficial bursae are involved. The swelling is caused by factors such as synovial proliferation, increased synovial fluid, and thickening of the bursal wall. When touching the swollen area, a fluctuant sensation may be felt due to the accumulation of fluid within the bursa.

2. Pain: Patients usually experience pain around the joint, especially noticeable during movement or when pressure is applied.

3. Limited mobility: Due to pain and swelling, patients may experience restricted movement. Pain may intensify during activity, causing patients to avoid or be unable to perform normal joint movements.

4. Stiffness: Joints may feel stiffer after prolonged inactivity, particularly upon waking in the morning.

5. Localized tenderness: Pressing lightly over the area affected by bursitis may cause significant pain.
