First Aid for Seizures
I witnessed a colleague experiencing a sudden seizure while at work today. What are the first aid methods for seizures?
First aid measures for convulsions mainly include the following aspects:
1. Maintain airway patency: Lay the patient down flat, loosen the collar and belt, turn the head to one side, and promptly remove any vomit or secretions from the mouth to prevent aspiration and suffocation. A soft cloth pad or tongue depressor can be placed between the upper and lower teeth to prevent tongue biting.
2. Control convulsions: When managing convulsions, do not forcibly press down on the patient's body, to avoid secondary injuries such as fractures. If emergency medications such as diazepam are available on site, they may be administered by intramuscular or intravenous injection according to medical instructions to control the convulsions.
3. Call emergency services: While providing initial first aid, immediately call emergency services and arrange for the patient to be transported to a hospital for further treatment.
4. Monitor vital signs: During the wait for emergency personnel to arrive, closely observe the patient's vital signs, such as heart rate, respiration, and level of consciousness, and promptly report any abnormalities.
5. Treat the underlying cause: If the convulsions are caused by epilepsy, anti-epileptic medications will be given; if they are caused by febrile seizures, cooling and sedative treatments will be administered accordingly.
