What causes sudden dizziness as if about to collapse?
I was just walking when suddenly I felt extremely dizzy, as if I were about to collapse. Recently, I've had trouble sleeping and have been under quite a bit of stress. I'm wondering what could have caused this sudden dizziness. Could it be a sign of something seriously wrong with my body?
Sudden onset of dizziness and the sensation of about to fall can commonly be caused by the following:
1. Low blood pressure: When the body rapidly transitions from a sitting or lying position to standing, blood flows toward the lower body, possibly causing temporary cerebral ischemia and resulting in dizziness.
2. Anemia: Insufficient number of red blood cells or low hemoglobin levels can lead to reduced oxygen supply, causing symptoms such as dizziness and fatigue.
3. Low blood sugar: This can cause dizziness, sweating, and trembling, usually relieved after eating.
4. Dehydration: Inadequate water intake or excessive sweating may be accompanied by symptoms such as dizziness, thirst, and reduced urine output.
5. Inner ear problems: Conditions such as Ménière's disease and vestibular neuritis may affect balance and cause dizziness.
6. Cardiovascular diseases: Insufficient blood supply to the heart or arrhythmia can also affect cerebral blood flow, leading to dizziness.
7. Neurological diseases: Stroke, cerebral vasospasm, and other conditions can directly impact brain function, resulting in dizziness.
8. Medication side effects: Antihypertensive drugs, sedatives, and other medications may cause dizziness as a side effect.
