What causes sudden dizziness and vertigo?
I have been experiencing sudden dizziness lately. What could be causing these sudden episodes of dizziness?
Sudden dizziness and vertigo may be caused by various factors, mainly including the following:
1. Unhealthy lifestyle habits: such as smoking, alcohol consumption, and long-term sleep deprivation, which may lead to sudden episodes of dizziness. Symptoms usually improve with adequate rest.
2. Head trauma: falling or experiencing a severe impact to the head may cause brain injury, subsequently leading to sudden vertigo. Prompt medical attention is required for wound management and evaluation.
3. Anemia: malnutrition or reduced red blood cell count can decrease the oxygen-carrying capacity of blood, potentially causing transient cerebral ischemia and hypoxia, resulting in symptoms like dizziness and vertigo.
4. Hypertension: a sudden increase in blood pressure may elevate cerebral vascular pressure, leading to abrupt dizziness, often accompanied by visual disturbances and headache.
5. Cervical spondylosis: cervical spine disorders may compress nerves or blood vessels, impairing cerebral blood supply and causing symptoms such as dizziness, vertigo, and tinnitus.
6. Other factors: conditions such as hypotension, hypoglycemia, otolithiasis (benign paroxysmal positional vertigo), and cerebral infarction may also cause sudden dizziness and vertigo.
When sudden dizziness and vertigo occur, it is recommended to seek medical attention promptly.
