Disease description:

I heard from a friend that the omeprazole enteric-coated capsules he previously used to treat his stomach condition can also be used as a hangover remedy. I would like to ask the doctor if this medication can indeed be used for that purpose?

Omeprazole enteric-coated capsules should not be used for alleviating alcohol intoxication.

Omeprazole enteric-coated capsules are primarily used to treat conditions caused by excessive stomach acid. As a proton pump inhibitor, they function by reducing gastric acid secretion and protecting the gastric mucosa, but they do not have the effect of alleviating alcohol intoxication. Discomfort caused by excessive alcohol consumption mainly results from the effects of alcohol and its metabolites on the body, and omeprazole does not directly act on these substances. Alleviating alcohol intoxication primarily involves replenishing glucose, vitamins, and adequate hydration to accelerate alcohol metabolism. Although omeprazole can protect the gastric mucosa and reduce irritation caused by alcohol, it does not directly participate in the metabolism of alcohol. Therefore, it should not be used as an antidote for alcohol. If excessive alcohol has been consumed, it is more important to allow the body to metabolize the alcohol naturally, maintain sufficient hydration and rest, and supplement with B vitamins and electrolytes when necessary to assist in recovery.

Under no circumstances is it recommended to use omeprazole as a remedy for alcohol intoxication. Other appropriate measures should be taken after excessive alcohol consumption to alleviate its effects. Those who frequently rely on medications to relieve discomfort following alcohol consumption should consider modifying their drinking habits to avoid health damage caused by excessive alcohol intake.
