Dr. Yang Ziqi

Powdered Panax notoginseng (Sanqi) is derived from the dried roots and rhizomes of the plant Panax notoginseng, belonging to the Araliaceae family. It promotes blood circulation and resolves blood stasis, playing an important role in the prevention of thrombosis and cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. It has the advantages of stopping bleeding without causing blood stasis, and activating blood circulation without depleting vital energy (Qi). Additionally, it can also be used for replenishing deficiencies. In traditional Chinese medicine, it is commonly used to treat hemoptysis, hematochezia, hematemesis, traumatic bleeding, and metrorrhagia or metrostaxis. It is also used for traumatic injuries, blood stasis with swelling and pain, and stabbing pain in the chest or abdomen.

There are various methods of administration, which should be adjusted according to individual constitution and medical condition:

1. Direct oral administration: Powdered Sanqi is generally recommended to be taken orally with hot water. Dosage varies depending on the purpose; for health maintenance, the usual dose is 1–3 grams, while for therapeutic use, it may be increased to 3–6 grams.

2. Preparation in soup: It can be stewed together with chicken, pork ribs, or other ingredients, providing both flavor and nourishment.

3. External application: For skin injuries or inflammation, Sanqi powder can be made into a paste and applied externally to the affected area, which may help promote wound healing.

Although Sanqi powder offers many benefits, patients should still take it under the guidance of a physician to avoid the risks associated with self-medication. Moreover, pregnant women and women during their menstrual period should use Sanqi powder cautiously to avoid potential adverse effects on the body.
