Leukoencephalopathy is a neurological disorder characterized primarily by damage or degeneration of the white matter in the brain, leading to impaired neurological function and cognitive decline. This condition is often hereditary and passed on to offspring through specific genetic patterns.

Its symptoms mainly include memory loss, difficulty concentrating, motor coordination disorders, behavioral abnormalities, and language difficulties. Leukoencephalopathy can be caused by various factors, including ischemic diseases, metabolic disorders, nervous system diseases, external injuries, and drug reactions.

However, there is currently no specific treatment for leukoencephalopathy, especially inherited forms such as metachromatic leukoencephalopathy and adrenoleukodystrophy, and thus the disease cannot be completely cured. Treatment is primarily symptomatic and supportive, such as administering corticosteroid replacement therapy and supplementing the diet with unsaturated fatty acids. These approaches may prolong survival and partially alleviate symptoms but cannot halt disease progression.
