The Efficacy, Functions, and Contraindications of Ophiopogon japonicus (Lungwort)
I've had a cough for quite a long time, and it's really uncomfortable. I've kept coughing and taken many medications, but none of them worked. A friend brought me some Ophiopogon japonicus (Mai Dong), and I wanted to learn more about its effects, uses, and contraindications.

Ophiopogon Root (McDoor) is a commonly used traditional Chinese herb with the following main functions and effects:
1. Nourishing yin and moistening the lungs: Ophiopogon can nourish yin, clear heat, moisten dryness, and relieve coughing, and is suitable for symptoms such as dry cough due to lung dryness and dry throat.
2. Benefiting the stomach and promoting body fluid production: It can help relieve symptoms such as thirst, indigestion, and stomach pain caused by insufficient stomach yin.
3. Clearing the heart and relieving irritability: Ophiopogon has the effect of calming the mind and relieving mental stress, and can be used to treat symptoms such as irritability, insomnia, and nervous tension.
4. Strengthening the heart and promoting diuresis: Some components in Ophiopogon have a positive inotropic effect on the heart and also possess mild diuretic properties.
Despite its benefits, there are certain contraindications for the use of Ophiopogon:
1. Use with caution in individuals with spleen and stomach deficiency cold: Due to its cold nature, people with spleen and stomach deficiency cold or those prone to diarrhea should avoid or use Ophiopogon cautiously.
2. Dietary restrictions: During the use of Ophiopogon, it is advisable to avoid greasy, spicy, and irritating foods, as well as tea, to prevent interference with the herb's effectiveness.
3. Use with caution during pregnancy: As the pharmacological effects of Ophiopogon on pregnant women are not yet fully understood, consultation with a physician is recommended before use.
