Dr. Zhou Xiaofeng

A baby's digestive system is different from that of an adult; it is more sensitive and delicate, thus requiring extra caution when handling. The following are some methods for management:

1. Adjust eating habits: Encourage the baby to consume foods rich in dietary fiber, such as fresh vegetables, fruits, corn, and oats. For breastfed infants, if constipation is caused by insufficient breast milk, the milk supply should be increased. For formula-fed infants, ensure the correct formula mixing ratio and offer an appropriate amount of water between feedings. Infants older than 4-5 months can gradually begin complementary foods, such as vegetable porridge.

2. Establish regular bowel habits: Encourage the baby to attempt defecation at a fixed time each day to help establish a regular intestinal reflex.

3. Moderate physical activity: Appropriate movement can promote intestinal peristalsis and aid in bowel movements.

4. Avoid excessive reliance on laxatives: Long-term use may lead to weakened intestinal function. If medication is needed, consult a physician and avoid purchasing or using adult medications on your own.

5. Abdominal massage: Massage the baby's abdomen in a clockwise direction with the navel as the center, which can help stimulate intestinal motility.

If constipation persists without improvement or is accompanied by other symptoms such as abdominal pain, vomiting, or blood in the stool, seek medical attention promptly.
