Dr. Zhou Xiaofeng

When a baby has otitis media, it is important to take the child to the hospital for examination and diagnosis by a qualified physician. Treatment for otitis media typically includes the following approaches:

1. General care: Keep the ear clean and dry, and avoid allowing water or other liquids to enter the ear. Ensure adequate rest and sufficient sleep for the baby, which helps the body recover.

2. Local treatment: Under a doctor's guidance, hydrogen peroxide may be used to clean the ear canal, followed by gently drying with a cotton swab. Then, antibiotic ear drops such as ofloxacin ear drops may be administered to relieve local inflammation. However, please note that ofloxacin ear drops are recommended for children aged 3 years and older.

3. Systemic medication: If symptoms of otitis media are severe, oral antibiotics such as cefdinir, cefuroxime, or roxithromycin may be required to control the infection. If fever or pain is present, antipyretics or analgesics may be used according to medical advice.

4. Ear tube insertion surgery: If the baby experiences recurrent episodes of otitis media that affect hearing or growth and development, the doctor may recommend ear tube insertion surgery to help drain fluid from the middle ear and reduce the risk of infection.

5. Daily care: Keep the ears dry and avoid allowing water to enter the ear canal. Be careful to clean the ears properly after bathing or swimming to prevent moisture retention, which can lead to infection.

All treatments should follow medical advice; do not administer medications on your own. If the baby develops symptoms such as fever, worsening ear pain, or hearing loss, seek medical attention promptly.
