Experiencing swollen and painful gums during pregnancy is caused by hormonal changes. Increased levels of estrogen and progesterone in the body can lead to dilated blood vessels in the gums, increasing their sensitivity to oral bacteria and causing symptoms such as gum inflammation, redness, swelling, and bleeding. To manage swollen and painful gums during pregnancy, consider the following approaches:

1. Diet: Pregnant women should avoid spicy, greasy, and high-calorie foods that may exacerbate symptoms due to heat accumulation. Instead, consume more bananas, pears, apples, mung beans, and leafy vegetables that help clear internal heat. Ensure adequate hydration by drinking plenty of water.

2. Oral hygiene: Pregnant women should brush their teeth at least twice daily using a soft-bristled toothbrush to gently clean teeth and gums. Flossing between teeth and rinsing the mouth after meals are also important. A mixture of saline solution or normal saline with hydrogen peroxide can be used as a mouth rinse to help reduce inflammation and kill bacteria.

3. Local irrigation and medication: If gum swelling and pain are severe, visit a dental clinic for professional local irrigation and application of medications, such as hydrogen peroxide solution, which is safe for both the mother and the fetus.

4. Cold compress: Pregnant women may also apply a cold, damp towel locally to help alleviate pain.

It is important that pregnant women do not take medications on their own without medical advice, as this may affect fetal development. If the pain significantly interferes with daily life, seek medical attention promptly.
