What should I do about a dry throat caused by tonsillitis?
I have tonsillitis; my throat feels dry, sore, and extremely uncomfortable. What should I do?
Tonsillitis is usually caused by bacterial or viral infections. The resulting inflammation can damage the mucous membranes of the throat, leading to symptoms such as dryness and pain.
It is important to rest adequately, drink plenty of water, and maintain good oral hygiene by rinsing the mouth with warm salt water. Avoid spicy and irritating foods, and consume more vegetables and fruits. If symptoms are mild, self-monitoring is recommended, with recovery typically occurring within about a week.
If symptoms become severe, such as high fever, severe sore throat, or difficulty swallowing, prompt medical attention is necessary. Treatment, guided by a physician, may include antibiotics or antiviral medications, such as penicillin or cephalosporins. Additionally, certain symptomatic relief medications, like lozenges or sprays, may also be used.
