The sensation of a pulsating or twitching belly in the late stages of pregnancy is usually caused by fetal movement within the uterus, such as kicking or shifting positions. This is a normal phenomenon, indicating that the fetus is healthy and active. As pregnancy progresses and the uterine space gradually becomes smaller, fetal movements may become more pronounced. At times, women may feel rhythmic pulsations similar to hiccups; these are actually contractions of the fetal diaphragm caused by the fetus swallowing amniotic fluid. This phenomenon could also be due to fetal hiccups, which typically occur because the fetal diaphragm is not fully developed and is easily stimulated. Additionally, physiological uterine contractions could be another possible cause of the pulsating sensation in the abdomen during late pregnancy; these are natural contractions of the uterus preparing for childbirth. Abdominal chilling and intrauterine hypoxia may also contribute to this phenomenon.

If this pulsating sensation is accompanied by pain, bleeding, or other abnormal symptoms, or if you notice a significant decrease in fetal movement, you should seek medical attention promptly. Pregnant women should closely monitor fetal movements and their own physical condition, maintain a balanced diet, avoid excessive fatigue, and attend regular prenatal checkups.
