I recently had an induced abortion and would like to ask the doctor: how long after an induced abortion does menstruation resume?

Dr. Zhang Lu

In general, menstruation resumes about 4-6 weeks after an induced abortion.

Vaginal bleeding usually occurs within 4 to 6 weeks after the procedure, which might be residual bleeding from the surgery or the first menstrual period. Most women resume normal menstrual cycles around 6-8 weeks postoperatively. However, some women may require a longer time to recover, especially those who had irregular menstrual cycles before the abortion.

The recovery time also depends on the patient's physical recovery and restoration of ovarian function. If the patient is young and in good physical condition, her ovaries may recover ovulatory function within a relatively short time, and menstruation may resume at around 4 weeks. If the patient is older or in poor physical condition, the recovery of ovarian ovulatory function may take longer, and menstruation might be delayed until around 6 weeks.

If menstruation has not resumed within two months after the procedure, it is advisable to seek medical attention promptly to rule out possible complications such as intrauterine adhesions or endocrine disorders. During this period, patients should ensure adequate rest and avoid sexual intercourse and tub bathing to reduce the risk of infection.
