It is recommended that women wait at least 6 to 8 weeks after a vaginal delivery before resuming sexual activity.

This period is known as the postpartum or puerperal period, a critical phase for a woman's physical recovery. During this time, the uterus needs time to contract back to its pre-pregnancy size, vaginal and perineal wounds require healing, and hormone levels are readjusting. Engaging in sexual activity too early may increase the risk of infection, interfere with wound healing, or even cause bleeding or pain.

After the postpartum examination—often conducted around the four-week (one-month) postpartum checkup—when the physician confirms that the mother's body has recovered well, sexual intercourse can be appropriately resumed. However, as the vagina and pelvic floor muscles may still be relatively loose at this stage, it is advisable to take protective measures such as using lubricants and controlling the frequency of intercourse to avoid vaginal injury or infection.

However, individual recovery rates vary, so activities should be carried out under a physician's guidance based on personal circumstances. Additionally, postpartum emotional and psychological well-being should also be monitored, ensuring both partners feel ready to re-establish intimacy.
