Why does the right buttock hurt during lactation, and sometimes the thigh and calf also hurt?
I am currently breastfeeding and have recently experienced pain in my right hip. Sometimes the pain extends down to my thigh and calf. Is this a normal occurrence?

Right-sided buttock pain in lactating women, sometimes accompanied by thigh and calf pain, may be caused by various factors. Prolonged breastfeeding in the same posture may lead to muscle fatigue and tension, causing localized pain. Sciatica is another common cause, especially during the postpartum recovery period, when changes in body structure may compress the sciatic nerve, resulting in pain. In addition, pelvic inflammatory disease, lumbar disc herniation, and other issues may also cause similar symptoms. Recommendations:
1. Calcium supplementation: Increase intake of calcium-rich foods such as milk and tofu, and take calcium supplements if necessary.
2. Adjust posture: Maintain proper posture when holding the baby and walking, and avoid staying in the same posture for long periods.
3. Heat application or massage: Apply a warm towel to the painful area or perform appropriate massage to promote blood circulation and relieve muscle tension and pain.
4. Appropriate exercise: Engage in moderate physical activity, such as walking or yoga, to enhance muscle strength and flexibility, but avoid overexertion.
5. Seek medical evaluation: If the pain persists or worsens, it is advisable to seek timely medical evaluation and treatment, such as blood calcium level testing, lumbar spine CT or MRI scans, to determine the exact cause of the pain.
