Disease description:

I have recently been experiencing weakness and soreness in my lower back and knees, to the point of being unable to walk. I heard this might be similar to the symptoms of bone atrophy (bone marrow deficiency). Could you please explain what bone atrophy means?

Dr. Chen Jian

Osteoasthenia (bone flaccidity) mainly describes osteoporosis, especially during its asymptomatic phase. Patients often exhibit symptoms such as soreness and weakness in the lower back and spine, difficulty maintaining an upright posture, weak and无力 legs, and walking difficulties. Additionally, patients may display external signs such as a dark, dull complexion lacking luster, and dry, withered teeth.

The development of osteoasthenia is closely related to numerous factors. For example, long-term overexertion can lead to kidney essence deficiency, while exposure to excessive heat can damage body fluids. These conditions cause the bones to gradually lose nourishment and become depleted, accompanied by a reduction in bone marrow. It should be particularly noted that the incidence of osteoasthenia is generally higher in women than in men, and the incidence increases progressively with age.

Treating osteoasthenia cannot rely solely on medication. A rational dietary plan rich in nutrients beneficial to bone health is necessary. Additionally, regulation with traditional Chinese medicine to nourish the body internally, combined with appropriate outdoor physical activity and sun exposure to promote calcium absorption, are also essential. A comprehensive approach incorporating these methods can effectively alleviate symptoms of osteoasthenia, enhance the patient's physical condition, and thereby improve quality of life.
