How to manage constipation in the elderly
My father currently suffers from severe constipation, which occurs almost every month. Despite prolonged调理 (regulation/treatment), there has been little improvement. I would like to ask specifically how constipation in the elderly should be properly managed.
Constipation in the elderly can be addressed from multiple aspects.
1. Dietary adjustment: Increase intake of dietary fiber, such as vegetables, fruits, and whole grains, which can promote intestinal motility, increase stool bulk, and soften stools, facilitating defecation. At the same time, maintaining adequate fluid intake helps keep stools moist.
2. Appropriate physical activity: Encourage the elderly to engage in moderate exercise, such as walking, tai chi, or yoga, which can enhance intestinal motility, promote digestion and absorption, and help prevent constipation. However, the intensity of exercise should be adjusted according to individual physical condition and health status to avoid overexertion.
3. Establishing regular bowel habits: Try to use the toilet at the same time each day, even if there is no urge to defecate, to help the body develop a regular bowel reflex.
4. Medication assistance: For elderly individuals with long-term constipation or those who do not respond well to dietary and lifestyle changes, mild laxatives or probiotics may be used under a doctor's supervision to help relieve symptoms. However, medication should be used under the guidance of a healthcare professional to avoid improper use that may lead to other health problems.
