Disease description:

I have recently experienced unusual throat pain, particularly noticeable during swallowing, with increased discomfort at night that interferes with sleep. There is also a mild fever and a general feeling of malaise. Examination revealed redness and swelling of the tonsils, along with white discharge. I am concerned it may be tonsillitis and would like to know if there are appropriate medications available for treatment.

If diagnosed with bacterial tonsillitis, doctors will prescribe appropriate antibiotics, such as penicillins or cephalosporins, and medication should be taken as directed. Commonly used antibiotics include Penicillin G, cephalosporins (e.g., Cefaclor tablets), Amoxicillin, etc., which work by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis or blocking protein synthesis to kill pathogenic cocci.

If diagnosed with viral tonsillitis, antiviral medications such as Oseltamivir and Ribavirin are better choices, as they can inhibit viral replication and thereby alleviate symptoms. Some traditional Chinese medicines, such as Lonicera flower granules and Isatis root granules, have also been proven effective for treating tonsillitis; they possess antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and analgesic properties that can effectively relieve symptoms.

Drink plenty of water, ensure adequate rest, and avoid irritating foods such as spicy, sour, or cold dishes, which may worsen throat discomfort. Maintain good personal hygiene and wash hands frequently. If symptoms persist or recur despite treatment, surgical removal of the tonsils may need to be considered.
