I recently learned that prosthetic materials are used in many surgeries, and I would like to know what types of prosthetics are commonly used in surgical procedures.

Prostheses are medical devices used to replace or repair body tissues, organs, or limbs. Prostheses are mainly divided into two categories: implantable prostheses and external prostheses.

I. Implantable Prostheses:

1. Silicone prostheses: This is the most commonly used prosthesis material, offering good shaping properties and stability, and relatively low cost. Silicone prostheses come in various shapes and can be selected or customized according to individual nasal shapes. They are well tolerated after implantation but may carry a risk of capsule contracture with long-term implantation.

2. Expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE): This porous material allows body tissue to grow into it, thereby enhancing the fixation of the prosthesis. This type of prosthesis feels more like natural nasal bone, but it is more expensive and technically challenging to implant, requiring higher surgical expertise.

3. Polyurethane prostheses: Polyurethane prostheses have excellent biocompatibility and can bond closely with surrounding tissues, reducing the risk of movement or displacement. However, their use is relatively limited domestically, mainly due to their high cost and insufficient market promotion.

4. Autologous cartilage grafting: This method does not use traditional prostheses but instead harvests cartilage tissue from other parts of the patient's body, such as the ear or rib cartilage. The cartilage is carved and then implanted into the nose. The advantage of autologous cartilage grafting is that it completely avoids rejection reactions and achieves a natural appearance, although the surgery is technically complex and requires a longer recovery period.

II. External Prostheses

1. Dentures: Including porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns, metal dentures, and plastic dentures, these are primarily used to restore the patient's chewing function. Dentures are characterized by high stability and resistance to aging or deformation.

2. Prosthetic limbs: Primarily composed of resin and alloys, some are covered with silicone sheaths. More advanced "myoelectric prostheses" can meet more precise human needs.

3. Others: Such as artificial eyes and cochlear implants. Artificial eyes include glass eyes, polymer eyes, and crystal eyes, with polymer eyes being the most commonly used. Cochlear implants are implantable electronic prostheses that include various types of electrodes.

It is recommended to consult thoroughly with a physician before deciding on surgery, fully understanding the characteristics of each type of prosthesis and making the most suitable choice based on individual circumstances. Additionally, choose qualified medical institutions and experienced surgeons to ensure the safety and effectiveness of the surgery.
