Can children take Ejiao (donkey-hide gelatin)?
I didn't finish the homemade Ejiao cake I made earlier. My younger brother has a child at home; can I give it to the child to eat? Can children consume Ejiao?
Children under three years of age are generally not advised to consume Ejiao (donkey-hide gelatin). Children older than three may take it in moderation. Ejiao is made by boiling donkey skin and contains abundant collagen and certain trace elements. These components may help adults by nourishing the blood and improving vital energy. However, for children, especially those under three years old, the digestive system is not yet fully developed. Ejiao's thick and sticky texture may increase gastrointestinal burden, potentially causing indigestion, diarrhea, and other problems. Moreover, Ejiao is a warming substance in terms of its medicinal property. Excessive or long-term consumption may cause excessive internal heat, leading to symptoms of "fire hyperactivity" such as mouth ulcers and constipation. Young children, whose constitutions are relatively weaker, are particularly susceptible to these effects.
For children older than three years who may need nutritional supplementation or improvement of their physical condition, Ejiao may be taken in appropriate amounts under the guidance of a qualified physician. Parents should strictly control the dosage and carefully monitor the child's response. If symptoms such as heatiness or indigestion occur, consumption should be stopped immediately. At the same time, children's nutritional needs should primarily be met through a balanced diet that includes various fresh vegetables, fruits, meats, and other foods to ensure comprehensive nutrition rather than relying on a single supplement.
