What foods can cause the skin to darken?
Recently, I have been feeling like my skin is getting darker, and I suspect it might be caused by something I ate. May I ask, what kind of food can cause skin darkening?

Some foods contain photosensitive substances, such as celery, coriander, figs, etc. If exposed to ultraviolet (UV) light after consumption, these substances may accelerate melanin synthesis, leading to skin darkening. They are also rich in metal elements such as copper and iron, which can directly or indirectly increase the quantity and activity of substances involved in melanin production. Moreover, the metal elements present in photosensitive foods may increase the levels of tyrosinase, tyrosine, and dopamine quinone, which are all associated with melanin formation. After ingestion of these substances, combined with UV exposure, melanin may deposit on the skin surface, resulting in skin darkening. In addition, long-term excessive intake of foods rich in trace elements such as copper and zinc may also enhance the activity of melanocytes, leading to skin pigmentation.
Therefore, in daily life, it is important to protect against sunlight, maintain a balanced diet, and consume more foods rich in vitamins C and E, such as kiwifruit, oranges, and nuts, which may help inhibit melanin production and maintain healthy skin.
