In the late stages of pregnancy, if the mother has inflammation, it may have certain effects on the fetus.

Inflammatory response is a natural defense mechanism of the body against infection or injury, but the special physiological state during pregnancy may make this response carry additional risks. Mild inflammation usually has minimal impact on the fetus, as the fetus's organs are largely developed and possess some resistance by the late stages of pregnancy. However, severe infection may lead to turbid amniotic fluid, fetal intrauterine ischemia and hypoxia, which could subsequently cause fetal asphyxia, preterm birth, and other serious consequences. Elevated inflammatory mediators such as cytokines and prostaglandins can promote uterine contractions and increase the risk of preterm birth. Long-term or severe inflammatory states may also impair placental function, reduce the delivery of nutrients and oxygen, affect fetal growth and development, and even cause serious complications such as placental abruption.

If the inflammation is located in the vagina and is not treated promptly, the infection may ascend to the uterus, causing premature rupture of membranes, which can lead to fetal infection and impair fetal development. Furthermore, a fetus infected in utero may have weakened lung function after birth or even develop life-threatening complications such as sepsis.
