Can I breastfeed if I have a fever during lactation?
Currently breastfeeding, I have recently developed a fever. I would like to ask if it is still safe to continue breastfeeding under these circumstances?
Whether a mother can continue breastfeeding when having a fever during lactation mainly depends on the cause of the fever and the body temperature.
If the fever is of low grade and caused by physiological factors, breastfeeding can usually continue, as it generally does not affect the baby's health.
However, if the fever is infectious, such as caused by a cold or other contagious diseases, it is recommended to temporarily stop breastfeeding. Since the baby's immune system is not fully developed, there is a risk of transmitting the disease through breast milk. Additionally, if antibiotic medications are required to treat the fever, it is also advisable to pause breastfeeding temporarily, as these medications may pass into the breast milk and potentially harm the baby.
In detail, if the body temperature is relatively low and symptoms are mild, breastfeeding can continue, but the mother should drink plenty of water to help eliminate toxins. If the fever is high and accompanied by severe symptoms, breastfeeding should be paused and medical treatment should be sought promptly.
