
What can patients with gout eat?
Recently, my grandfather has developed gout. I would like to ask the doctor, what can gout patients eat?

Gout is a disease caused by abnormal uric acid metabolism in the body, commonly manifested as joint pain, redness, and swelling. For patients with gout, scientific and reasonable dietary management is one of the important ways to control the condition and prevent flare-ups. The following are some foods suitable for gout patients:
1. Moderate protein: Animal foods such as meat and seafood contain high levels of purines and should be consumed in moderation. White meats like chicken and duck can be chosen, while organ meats and seafood with high purine content should be avoided. Plant-based protein sources such as legumes and tofu are relatively safer choices.
2. Fruits: Gout patients can consume more fruits rich in vitamin C, such as citrus fruits, strawberries, and kiwifruit, as well as fruits that help lower uric acid levels, such as apricots, grapes, and mulberries. These fruits are not only nutritious but also assist in regulating uric acid levels in the body.
3. Vegetables: Low-purine vegetables such as leafy greens, bitter melon, and tomatoes are recommended. Additionally, vegetables like cucumbers, konjac, luffa, lotus roots, and winter melons can help promote urination and maintain water and electrolyte balance.
4. Healthy fats: Choose healthy fat sources such as olive oil, nuts, and fish oil, and avoid saturated and trans fats to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.
5. Dairy products: Low-fat dairy products such as skim milk and yogurt are rich in whey protein and help lower blood uric acid levels. Gout patients can consume these in moderation.
6. Nuts: Moderate consumption of nuts such as sunflower seeds, hazelnuts, and corn can also help control disease progression.
