Can hemorrhoids cause diarrhea and abdominal pain?
Recently, my hemorrhoids have flared up, and I've also been experiencing frequent stomach pain and occasional diarrhea. I'd like to know whether my diarrhea and abdominal pain could be caused by the hemorrhoids.

In general, hemorrhoids do not cause diarrhea or abdominal pain. If a patient experiences symptoms of hemorrhoids along with diarrhea or abdominal pain, it is recommended to seek medical attention for a comprehensive examination to rule out other digestive system diseases.
The affected area of hemorrhoids is mainly around the anal canal, including above and below the dentate line and near the anal opening. Therefore, the symptoms are relatively localized. Typical symptoms include rectal bleeding, anal lumps, or protrusion of a mass from the anus. These symptoms primarily affect the anal region and rarely cause abdominal pain or diarrhea.
Abdominal pain generally is not a direct symptom of hemorrhoids. However, if hemorrhoids lead to severe inflammation or complications such as thrombosed external hemorrhoids, patients may experience pain in the anal area, which can sometimes be mistaken for abdominal pain. Additionally, if a patient excessively suppresses bowel movements due to fear of hemorrhoidal bleeding, resulting in increased intestinal pressure, it may cause abdominal discomfort or pain.
In daily life, it is advisable to maintain good lifestyle habits, eat a healthy diet, and have regular bowel movements to promote digestive health and help prevent hemorrhoids.
