Is a urinary bag required for life after nephrostomy?
I am 55 years old, male. Recently, I underwent a nephrostomy procedure due to kidney problems, and currently need to use a urine bag. I would like to know whether having a nephrostomy means that I will need to use a urine bag permanently?

Kidney stoma (nephrostomy) does not necessarily mean wearing a urinary bag permanently. A nephrostomy is a surgical procedure used to treat kidney diseases by creating a passage near the kidney to drain urine out of the body, thereby relieving pressure on the kidney and aiding in the recovery of kidney function. After surgery, patients usually need to wear a urinary bag to collect the drained urine. In some chronic or complex cases, such as severe kidney failure, difficulty in reconstructing the urinary tract, or after multiple failed surgeries, long-term or even lifelong use of a nephrostomy tube may be necessary.
Patients are advised to communicate with their doctors regarding the need for permanent urinary bag use and undergo detailed evaluation and follow-up. Doctors will develop individualized treatment plans according to specific conditions. If kidney function gradually recovers or alternative treatment options become available, there may be an opportunity to remove the stoma tube. Additionally, patients should maintain good personal hygiene, regularly clean the stoma site, and change the urinary bag to prevent infection. Paying attention to diet and fluid intake, and avoiding high-salt and high-protein foods, can also help reduce the burden on the kidneys.
