Dr. Shen Yonghua

Abdominal distension and persistent hiccups may be caused by poor eating habits, excessive intake of gas-producing foods, cold exposure, gastrointestinal dysfunction, chronic gastritis, and other factors.

1. Poor eating habits: Unhealthy eating behaviors while consuming food may cause large amounts of air to enter the body along with food, leading to gas accumulation in the intestines, thereby causing abdominal distension and persistent hiccups.

2. Excessive intake of gas-producing foods: Consuming excessive amounts of foods high in starch, which can produce significant amounts of gas when decomposed in the intestines, leading to abdominal distension and hiccups.

3. Cold exposure: Failure to keep the stomach adequately warm and subsequent exposure to cold air may cause abdominal distension. Additionally, cold stimulation may lead to diaphragm spasms, thereby causing persistent hiccups.

4. Gastrointestinal dysfunction: Gastrointestinal disorders may lead to excessive gas production in the intestines or hinder the smooth expulsion of gas, resulting in abdominal distension and persistent hiccups.

5. Chronic gastritis: Chronic gastritis may impair intestinal function, preventing normal digestion and absorption of food, thus producing excessive gas that accumulates in the intestines, leading to abdominal distension and hiccups.

To alleviate symptoms of abdominal distension and persistent hiccups, some measures can be taken, such as adjusting eating habits, avoiding excessive consumption of gas-producing foods, keeping the stomach warm, maintaining emotional stability, and so on.
