Is laser acne scar removal painful?
I am 22 years old. Recently, I had a breakout of pimples, which left some acne marks. I would like to know whether laser treatment for removing acne marks is painful.

In general, from a professional perspective, the laser treatment for removing acne marks is typically associated with a certain degree of pain, although the intensity of pain varies among individuals and is influenced by multiple factors. Laser removal of acne marks works on the principle of photothermal action, targeting the skin areas affected by acne marks. During the treatment, when laser energy is applied to the skin, pigment particles within the skin absorb this energy. This process stimulates the nerve endings in the skin, resulting in a sensation of pain.
The intensity of pain experienced is closely related to the individual's pain tolerance. Some patients may be more sensitive to pain and may feel relatively significant discomfort. For these individuals, measures can be taken prior to treatment to reduce discomfort, such as applying anesthetic creams or pain-relief ointments. Different types of lasers also cause varying levels of pain during treatment. Non-ablative fractional lasers, due to their relatively gentle approach, tend to cause milder pain, often described as similar to the snapping of a rubber band against the skin. In contrast, ablative fractional lasers may cause more intense pain due to their stronger therapeutic effects.
Although laser treatment for acne marks may cause a certain level of discomfort, this pain is manageable through appropriate anesthesia and post-treatment care, and the aesthetic results are often satisfactory. If you are particularly sensitive to pain or have any concerns about the treatment, it is essential to communicate fully with your doctor before proceeding, in order to develop a suitable treatment plan.
