Are there any harmful effects of laser spot removal?
I am 38 years old this year, and I have started to develop some small spots on my face. I would like to remove them with laser treatment, but I wonder if there are any harmful effects of laser spot removal?

Generally, as a modern skin beautification technique, laser spot removal mainly works by using high-energy laser beams to target pigmented areas on the skin, breaking down the pigment particles so they are absorbed or expelled by the body, thereby achieving the effect of removing spots. Possible adverse effects include redness and pain, pigmentation or hypopigmentation, skin infection, scar formation, and spot recurrence.
After treatment, the treated area may experience redness, mild pain, or a burning sensation, which are normal reactions that usually subside on their own within a few days. In rare cases, laser treatment may cause increased or decreased pigmentation in the local skin area. The former is known as post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, while the latter refers to hypopigmentation. These changes can sometimes be temporary, but permanent effects are also possible.
Laser spot removal can cause certain damage to the skin. If sterilization during the procedure is inadequate or if the weakened skin is scratched after treatment, skin breakdown and bleeding may occur. Accidental exposure to water may also lead to bacterial invasion. Improper operation during laser treatment, such as setting the laser energy too high, may damage deep skin tissues, causing burns. Laser spot removal mainly targets existing spots; if sun protection and proper skincare are neglected after treatment, new spots may reappear.
To ensure the safety and effectiveness of the treatment, patients need to fully understand relevant information before undergoing treatment and follow the guidance of a qualified physician for both treatment and post-treatment care. At the same time, maintaining healthy lifestyle and dietary habits, along with enhanced skincare, can also help reduce the risks associated with laser spot removal.
