I am 23 years old this year. I recently plan to undergo hair removal and would like to know whether laser hair removal can eliminate body odor (particularly underarm odor).

In general, laser hair removal cannot eliminate body odor. Body odor mainly results from abnormal secretory function of the apocrine sweat glands in the armpits. The sweat secreted by these glands contains components such as fatty acids and proteins, which are decomposed by bacteria on the skin surface, producing a distinctive pungent odor. Laser hair removal works by targeting the melanin in hair follicles, which absorbs specific wavelengths of laser light. The laser energy is converted into heat energy, which destroys the hair follicles, thereby inhibiting hair growth. This process primarily affects the melanocytes in the hair follicles and does not have a direct effect on the apocrine sweat glands.

Although laser hair removal can reduce the number of underarm hairs and thereby reduce the environment suitable for bacterial growth and the likelihood of sweat retention to some extent, this is only a temporary solution. The fundamental cause of body odor is the abnormal secretion of apocrine sweat glands, and laser hair removal does not address this underlying issue.

If one wants to eliminate body odor, treatments targeting the apocrine sweat glands should be adopted. Surgically removing the apocrine sweat glands in the armpit area can fundamentally resolve the problem of abnormal secretion. However, this method involves significant trauma and a longer recovery period. Maintaining good personal hygiene habits in daily life, such as showering regularly, changing clothes frequently, and using antiperspirants, can also help alleviate symptoms of body odor.
