Can gingivitis heal on its own?
I am 22 years old and would like to know if gingivitis can heal on its own.

In general, gingivitis usually cannot resolve on its own and must be managed through professional treatment and good oral hygiene habits.
Whether gingivitis can resolve spontaneously depends on the severity of the condition. If symptoms are mild, such as slight redness and swelling of the gums and minimal bleeding, the inflammation may gradually subside through improved oral care, including proper brushing, flossing, and use of mouthwash. However, the self-healing process is slow and prone to recurrence. If the condition is severe—for instance, with noticeable gum swelling, frequent bleeding, formation of abscesses, or signs of periodontitis such as periodontal pockets and tooth mobility—it cannot heal on its own and requires timely medical intervention.
If left untreated, gingivitis may progress to periodontitis, leading to tooth loosening or even tooth loss. It may also increase the risk of systemic diseases such as heart disease and diabetes. Therefore, it is recommended to seek medical attention promptly upon noticing symptoms such as red, swollen, or bleeding gums. Professional cleaning (scaling) should be performed to remove dental plaque and calculus, and medication may be needed in some cases. Maintaining good oral hygiene practices and undergoing regular dental checkups and cleanings are essential for preventing recurrence of gingivitis.
