Disease description:

Lately, I’ve been feeling unwell for unknown reasons, so I went to the hospital for a physical examination. The results showed that my low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol level is elevated. I’d like to know what causes high LDL cholesterol.

Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) is a catabolic product derived from the breakdown of very-low-density lipoprotein (VLDL), or synthesized in the liver and absorbed in the intestines. Its primary function is to transport cholesterol from the liver to peripheral tissues. Elevated LDL levels suggest an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. In such cases, routine diagnostic tests—such as electrocardiography (ECG), echocardiography, and cardiac enzyme assays—may be performed.
