Is it normal for CA19-9 to be elevated alone?
Disease description:
During my physical examination, I found that my CA19-9 level was elevated alone. Is it normal for CA19-9 to be elevated in isolation?
A solitary elevation of CA19-9 is generally considered abnormal. An isolated increase in serum CA19-9 levels may indicate underlying conditions such as hepatic or renal insufficiency or diabetes mellitus. It may also raise suspicion for malignancy. In patients with diabetes, elevated blood glucose levels can sometimes lead to an isolated rise in CA19-9. If no other underlying diseases are identified, further diagnostic evaluation should be pursued promptly.
