Introduction
Ultrasound echogenicity is a term used in breast ultrasound to describe the varying densities of different tissues. It is categorized as hyperechoic, isoechoic, hypoechoic, or anechoic. Hypoechoic areas in the breast are commonly associated with fibrocystic changes (breast hyperplasia) or breast nodules. Hyperechoic findings typically indicate calcifications or stones, whereas anechoic areas suggest cysts. Breast hyperplasia is a common benign condition among women; breast nodules often arise from such hyperplastic changes and are frequently fibroadenomas.
Due to the accelerated pace of modern life and irregular eating habits, women may develop breast diseases. During examinations, low-echo findings in the breast are commonly observed. But what exactly does “low echogenicity in the breast” mean?
What does “low echogenicity in the breast” mean?
Echogenicity refers to the ultrasound appearance reflecting differences in tissue density within the breast. It is categorized as hyperechoic (strong echo), isoechoic (equal echo), hypoechoic (low echo), or anechoic (no echo). Hypoechoic areas in the breast are commonly associated with fibrocystic changes (breast hyperplasia) or breast nodules. Hyperechoic areas typically indicate calcifications or stones, while anechoic areas suggest cysts. Fibrocystic changes are common benign conditions among women; breast nodules often arise from such changes and are frequently fibroadenomas. In most cases, no specific treatment is required. However, surgical excision may be indicated for large nodules or those suspected of malignant transformation.
“Hypoechoic” is a term used in breast ultrasound (color Doppler ultrasound) to describe breast nodules, primarily reflecting variations in tissue density. If a hypoechoic nodule exhibits irregular shape and abundant blood flow, the possibility of breast cancer increases slightly. In such cases, further evaluation with mammography, breast MRI, or direct surgical excision followed by pathological biopsy is recommended to confirm the diagnosis. Conversely, small, well-defined hypoechoic nodules with regular morphology and clear margins are highly suggestive of fibroadenoma, and initial observation may be appropriate. However, if the fibroadenoma is large or occurs during pregnancy, surgical removal is advised to definitively determine its nature.
