Why do stretch marks itch after childbirth?
Under normal circumstances, women’s skin is relatively smooth. However, during pregnancy, the continuous expansion of the abdomen can cause localized tearing of the skin tissue, resulting in stretch marks (striae gravidarum). Some women experience itching associated with these stretch marks after childbirth. So, what causes postpartum stretch mark itching?
What Causes Postpartum Stretch Mark Itching?
Itching associated with postpartum stretch marks is a normal physiological phenomenon. The primary reason is that, after delivery, the uterus shrinks and the abdominal area loses the tension it experienced during pregnancy. As a result, the previously torn dermal collagen and elastic fibers begin to repair and re-knit, which may trigger localized itching. This process does not adversely affect the mother’s health, so there is no need for excessive concern.

Postpartum stretch mark itching mainly results from insufficient skin hydration, leading to inadequate nourishment of the skin. First and foremost, avoid scratching with your hands to prevent skin injury and potential infection. Instead, apply olive oil daily to the affected areas—or use a specialized massage cream followed by gentle massage. Maintaining skin moisture helps alleviate itching and may also help fade stretch marks over time.

In daily diet, postpartum women should consume fresh fruits rich in vitamin C—such as oranges, tangerines, grapefruits, and kiwifruits—to support skin health and nourishment. Additionally, when bathing, avoid using excessively hot water, as this can strip away natural skin oils and lead to excessive dryness. We hope this article has been helpful to you!
