Can you drink cold water when you have tonsillitis?
Acute tonsillitis is primarily associated with infection and immune factors. The main causative pathogen is beta-hemolytic streptococcus; however, non-hemolytic streptococci, staphylococci, pneumococci, Haemophilus influenzae, and certain viruses can also cause acute tonsillitis. So, can patients with tonsillitis drink cold water?
Can patients with tonsillitis drink cold water?
Patients with tonsillitis may drink cold water, but generally, a light, bland diet is recommended. Drinking honeysuckle tea, chrysanthemum tea, honey water, or bamboo leaf tea may help alleviate symptoms. Anti-inflammatory medications may also be taken. In severe cases, surgical removal of the affected tonsils may be necessary to achieve therapeutic effect. Most importantly, patients should drink plenty of fluids—preferably warm (not hot) water—to help rinse the throat and reduce inflammation. Excessively hot water may exacerbate swelling; lukewarm water is ideal. Cold water and icy beverages (e.g., ice cream drinks) should be avoided.

This practice also supports disease recovery. Oral hygiene must be maintained—rinsing the mouth promptly after meals helps keep the oral cavity clean. Tonsillar inflammation is commonly caused by bacterial infection, especially beta-hemolytic streptococcus, staphylococci, and Streptococcus pneumoniae; mixed infections involving bacteria along with rhinovirus or adenovirus are also observed. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), tonsillitis results either from external invasion of heat pathogens or from accumulation of internal heat in the lungs and stomach, leading to pharyngeal inflammation.

Although icy water is cold and cooling—and may temporarily relieve throat pain and discomfort in tonsillitis patients—it may induce gastric coldness, gastrointestinal discomfort, or even gastric pain upon entering the stomach if excessively cold. Therefore, consumption should be moderated according to individual tolerance. We hope this information is helpful to you.
