What causes stomach pain that feels like hunger?
Stomach pain resembling hunger may be caused by gastrointestinal dysfunction, duodenal ulcer, chronic gastritis, or other conditions.
1. Gastrointestinal Dysfunction
Stomach pain that feels like hunger may result from gastrointestinal dysfunction caused by psychological factors, genetic predisposition, irregular eating habits, or other reasons. This condition may also be accompanied by symptoms such as abdominal pain, alternating diarrhea and constipation, bowel sounds, heartburn, and acid reflux.
2. Duodenal Ulcer
This type of pain could be due to a duodenal ulcer caused by excessive gastric acid secretion, weakened mucosal defense in the duodenum, or infection with Helicobacter pylori. Additional symptoms may include vomiting, nausea, belching, and bloating.
3. Chronic Gastritis
Chronic gastritis may arise from prolonged irritation due to unhealthy dietary habits—such as frequent consumption of strong tea, coffee, or alcohol—long-term use of steroid or salicylate medications, or bile reflux. Patients may also experience reduced appetite, weight loss, postprandial fullness, anorexia, and indigestion.
There are many possible causes of stomach pain that feels like hunger. It is recommended that patients actively identify the underlying cause and cooperate with their doctors to receive appropriate treatment.
