Introduction
Calamine refers to calamine lotion. Calamine lotion can be applied when insect bites have not broken or ulcerated the skin, as it has anti-inflammatory and anti-itch effects. Calamine protects the skin and provides an astringent action. Calamine lotion may be used for acute pruritic skin conditions or skin itching caused by insect bites. However, if the skin has broken or ulcerated after an insect bite, calamine lotion is not recommended.

Zinc oxide lotion usually refers to calamine lotion. If the skin is not broken after an insect bite, calamine lotion can typically be applied to help reduce inflammation and relieve itching. However, if the skin has broken open following an insect bite, it is not recommended to use calamine lotion.

Calamine lotion contains ingredients such as calamine and zinc oxide, which help protect and soothe the skin while providing a drying effect. It can be used for acute itchy skin conditions such as eczema, prickly heat, or insect-bite-induced itching, provided that no blisters are present or that any blisters have not ruptured. In such cases, applying calamine lotion may help reduce inflammation and relieve itching. However, if the skin has broken open due to insect bites, using calamine lotion is not advised, as it may irritate the skin and cause pain. If symptoms such as redness, swelling, or a burning sensation occur during use, discontinue application immediately.

Besides calamine lotion, other remedies such as cooling oil or herbal balm (e.g., Tiger Balm or Mentholated Oil) can also be used after insect bites to quickly relieve itching.
