Can you drink cold beverages when you have gastroenteritis?
Gastroenteritis, commonly referred to as gastroenteritis in clinical practice, generally requires avoiding cold drinks.
Gastroenteritis often causes discomforts such as diarrhea, abdominal pain, and nausea, leading to reduced gastrointestinal digestive function. In more severe cases, patients may also experience fever, weight loss, and dehydration. Consuming cold beverages can cause excessive contraction of the smooth muscles in the gastrointestinal tract, worsening pain. Additionally, for patients currently undergoing treatment, drinking cold liquids may reduce the absorptive capacity of the gastrointestinal mucosa, thereby impairing treatment effectiveness.
Patients with gastroenteritis should focus on warm, easily digestible foods and avoid spicy or irritating foods. While paying attention to diet, if abdominal pain is severe, antispasmodic medications such as atropine or anisodamine may be used under a doctor's guidance to relieve intestinal spasms and alleviate pain. If diarrhea is severe, antidiarrheal agents such as compound diphenoxylate or montmorillonite may also be necessary to slow intestinal motility and promote recovery.
