How long does it take for body temperature to decrease after sweating due to fever?
Fever refers to an elevated body temperature. The time it takes for body temperature to drop after sweating due to fever depends on the patient's physical condition, method of cooling, and other factors. It may take around 30 minutes or about 2 hours for the temperature to decrease.
1. Around 30 minutes
If the fever is not severe—for example, around 38.5°C—and physical cooling methods are actively applied or antipyretic medications are taken (commonly used drugs include ibuprofen sustained-release capsules, acetaminophen tablets, and diclofenac sodium sustained-release tablets)—and if the body’s thermoregulatory mechanisms are strong, along with increased fluid intake and adequate rest, body temperature usually begins to drop about 30 minutes after sweating.
2. Around 2 hours
If a high fever occurs, such as a body temperature between 39.1°C and 40°C or even higher, this is often caused by a serious infection. In such cases, intense inflammatory responses, accelerated metabolism, disrupted thermoregulatory balance, and highly active pathogens, combined with poor physical health or inappropriate cooling methods, may slow down the rate of temperature reduction. It might take about 2 hours or even longer before sweating occurs and body temperature starts to decline.
Patients are advised to promptly visit a hospital and, under medical guidance, adopt appropriate measures based on the underlying cause to reduce body temperature, preventing persistent elevation that could seriously affect health.
