Introduction
It is generally not recommended to use cotton swabs to clean the ears, as the tip of the swab may push deep into the ear canal and pack earwax further inside, potentially causing more severe blockage within the ear. Additionally, if a cerumen impaction already exists, using a cotton swab cannot remove it and may instead push it deeper, possibly leading to damage to the eardrum.

Cotton swabs are generally not recommended for cleaning the ears.

If a patient has excessive ear canal secretions, it is generally advised not to use cotton swabs to clean the ears. This is mainly because the cotton head of a swab is loosely packed and, when inserted into the ear canal, may push earwax deeper into the ear. Although some wax may be removed, most may be forced further inward, leading to more severe blockage inside the ear. This can increase the sensation of fullness or clogging in the ear and may even cause abnormal symptoms such as tinnitus or hearing loss. Additionally, if a patient has a narrow external ear canal and already has an earwax impaction (cerumen plug), using a cotton swab may not only fail to remove the plug but could push it deeper, potentially causing damage to the eardrum.

Normally, earwax provides a protective function for the eardrum, and the ear canal has a self-cleaning mechanism. Small amounts of secretions usually exit the ear naturally through movements such as chewing and swallowing. However, if excessive earwax production leads to cerumen impaction, professional cleaning tools should be used under a doctor's guidance to safely remove the blockage.
