Introduction
In elderly people, prolonged runny nose with clear mucus is usually caused by colds, rhinitis, nasal polyps, or similar conditions. Due to their generally weaker constitution and reduced immune resistance, older adults are particularly susceptible to viral infections that can lead to the common cold. Cold symptoms often include nasal congestion, runny nose with clear discharge, as well as dryness and itching in the throat. Treatment may include medications such as compound paracetamol and amantadine capsules or cold powders, taken under a doctor's guidance.
Clear nasal discharge in elderly individuals over a prolonged period is usually caused by conditions such as the common cold, rhinitis, or nasal polyps.
1. Common cold: Elderly people often have weaker constitutions and reduced immunity, making them more susceptible to viral infections that lead to colds. Symptoms commonly include nasal congestion, clear runny nose, along with dryness and itching of the throat. 2. Rhinitis: Unhygienic living environments can irritate the nasal mucosa in older adults, causing congestion and swelling of the mucous membrane, which may trigger inflammation. Under a doctor's guidance, treatments such as triamcinolone acetonide nasal spray or fluticasone propionate nasal spray can help alleviate symptoms.
3. Nasal polyps: Nasal polyps can cause runny nose, as well as ear discomfort and nasal pressure or pain. Under medical supervision, medications such as fluticasone propionate or acetic acid solutions may be used for treatment.
