What causes abdominal pain after abortion?
Abdominal pain after abortion may be a normal physiological response, or it could result from uterine cavity infection, gastrointestinal dysfunction, or surgical error. It is recommended to seek medical evaluation and appropriate treatment at a hospital as early as possible.
1. Normal physiological response
After an induced abortion procedure, the uterus has not yet fully recovered and contains fresh wounds or injured surfaces. Once these wounds heal completely, the pain will subside.
2. Uterine cavity infection
If proper postoperative care is not taken after an abortion, bacterial invasion may lead to infection of the uterine cavity, resulting in abdominal pain. Besides pain, symptoms may include vaginal bleeding, foul-smelling discharge in large amounts, and possibly low-grade fever.
3. Gastrointestinal dysfunction
Medications used for medical abortion, such as mifepristone and misoprostol, may cause gastrointestinal disturbances leading to abdominal pain. This condition is often accompanied by abnormal bowel movements, nausea, and vomiting.
4. Surgical error
Surgical mistakes during the procedure, such as injury to pelvic organs or uterine perforation, can also cause abdominal pain, which is typically severe.
