Side effects of iron supplements
Side effects of iron supplements may include black stools, allergic reactions, and gastrointestinal discomfort.
1. Black stools
When iron supplements combine with hydrogen sulfide in the intestines, they form black ferrous sulfide, resulting in black-colored stools. Alternatively, unabsorbed iron supplements may be excreted through feces after intake. If a patient develops black stools, normal stool color usually returns within 1–2 days after discontinuing the supplement. However, if black stools persist after stopping the iron supplement, the patient should visit a local hospital for routine stool examination and fecal occult blood testing, and receive targeted treatment under medical supervision.
2. Allergic reactions
Allergic reactions to iron supplements may be caused by genetic factors. Symptoms may include chest tightness, shortness of breath, and urticaria (hives). Once an allergic reaction occurs, patients should discontinue the iron supplement immediately and, under a doctor’s guidance, take medications such as dexamethasone tablets and vitamin C tablets for anti-allergic treatment.
3. Gastrointestinal discomfort
Iron supplements used to treat iron-deficiency anemia can irritate the gastrointestinal tract. Additionally, patients with pre-existing gastrointestinal motility disorders or indigestion may be more susceptible. To reduce gastrointestinal irritation, it is recommended to take iron supplements during or after meals. Under medical supervision, patients may also take medications such as domperidone tablets or Jianwei Xiaoshi tablets to relieve symptoms.
In addition, iron supplements may cause diarrhea and abdominal bloating in some individuals. Patients experiencing these symptoms should seek evaluation at a local hospital and receive targeted treatment under medical guidance.
