Introduction
High blood sugar may cause leg cramps. Elevated glucose levels can damage nerves and muscles, potentially increasing the risk of muscle cramping. In severe cases of high blood sugar, the influx of calcium ions into muscle cells may be disrupted, stimulating nerves and blood vessels and leading to loss of calcium ions within muscle cells, which may result in leg cramps.

Elevated blood glucose levels may cause leg cramps. High blood sugar can damage nerves and muscles, which may increase the risk of muscle cramping.

If hyperglycemia is severe, it may interfere with calcium ion influx into muscle cells, stimulating nerves and blood vessels and leading to loss of calcium ions within muscle cells, potentially resulting in leg cramps. Additionally, the causes of leg cramps are complex and may include issues with lower limb blood vessels, exposure to cold, intense physical activity, or deficiencies in body minerals such as calcium—for example, calf muscle spasms can be caused by calcium deficiency.

In daily life, it's important to get adequate sun exposure and supplement calcium and vitamin D to promote calcium absorption. Also, neurological disorders cannot be ruled out. For instance, cramping may be an early sign of diabetic foot. Numbness, pain, or cramping in the limbs of people with diabetes may be related to diabetic peripheral neuropathy. For leg cramps associated with diabetes, the first step is to control blood glucose effectively. Under a doctor’s guidance, medications that improve blood circulation and remove blood stasis—such as Jiegu Xujin Tablets, Jingubu Ning Liniment, or Jingshu Granules—may be used, along with calcium and vitamin D supplements, which can help alleviate symptoms.

If high blood sugar and leg cramps occur, further laboratory tests at a hospital are necessary to identify the underlying cause before initiating proper treatment. This helps bring blood glucose levels back to normal, reduces leg cramping, prevents disease progression, and avoids serious health consequences.
